Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist. He became the first black head of state in South Africa, serving as president from 1994 to 1999. Mandela spent 27 years in prison for his anti-apartheid activities before his release in 1990. His persistent fight for racial equality and reconciliation earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
